After two years of negotiations, new EU packaging and packaging waste rules were adopted today in Plenary by the European Parliament.
APPLiA advocated for reuse only when environmentally beneficial and ensuring adequate product protection during transport.
While some aspects of the legislation remain of concern for the sector, the Regulation will provide much-needed clarity and predictability to European manufacturers.
“The harmonisation of labelling on packaging remains critical in the adopted text as the presence of national labelling requirements could create additional market barriers and hinder the free movement of products across borders,” explained APPLiA Environment Policy Manager Franziska Decker.
APPLiA will continue to monitor the implementation of the legislation and remains committed to working with all stakeholders to ensure the success of this crucial legislation.
