Event report: the role of home appliances in Europe’s Clean Industrial Deal

Event reports 20 Mar 2025

The Clean Industrial Deal is seen as a defining moment for Europe's industrial transformation. Aimed at driving sustainability, improving competitiveness, and enhancing energy efficiency, the Deal has captured the attention of key stakeholders across Europe. At the latest European Forum for Manufacturing (EFM) event, representatives from the European Commission, industry associations, and the European Parliament came together to share their insights, all acknowledging the Deal’s potential to redefine the future of European industry.

The European Commission’s Aleksandra Kordecka from the Cabinet of Vice President Séjourné,  highlighted the Deal as a continuation of the European Green Deal, offering a crucial “business plan” for Made in Europe. “The Clean Industrial Deal aims to provide EU industries with the tools and framework to stay competitive,” she said. “As Europe pushes forward in the global race for clean technologies, it must remain a leader in the green transition. This is not just about reducing emissions, but about maintaining Europe's technological edge and securing our industrial base” said Kordecka.

In this framework, “a Deal that works is a Deal that supports all sectors instrumental to achieve Europe’s decarbonisation and competitiveness goals. And this includes the home appliance industry, representing an integral part of the industrial transformation that this Deal envisions”– said Korrina Hegarty, Senior Environment Policy Director at APPLiA. The sector is pivotal in decarbonisation, boosting competitiveness, and enabling European industry to meet its climate goals.

A key objective of the Clean Industrial Deal is to make the EU a global leader in the circular economy by 2030. APPLiA strongly supports the Circular Economy as a core element, emphasising the home appliance industry's crucial role in both decarbonisation and resource recovery. While modern appliances contain valuable materials for Europe’s circular economy, much e-waste remains unrecycled. “To achieve this vision, it is essential to make key policy decisions, enhance responsibility across the WEEE value chain, and create a unified market for secondary raw materials, ensuring Europe truly leads in resource efficiency” said Hegarty.

Representatives from leading EU industries emphasised the urgent need to implement the Clean Industrial Deal to ensure Europe’s industrial transformation remains on track. Across sectors, there was a unified call for Europe to act decisively to remain competitive in the global stage, advocating for regulatory frameworks that support investment and facilitate cross-border collaboration. Simplifying processes and creating a cohesive approach across industries will be key to unlocking the full potential of the Deal and driving Europe's transition to a sustainable, circular economy.

In the course of ongoing discussions, recognising the home appliance industry’s role in Europe’s industrial transformation is crucial. Home appliances are not only a source of critical raw materials but also strategic enablers of sustainability, driving energy efficiency and supporting decarbonisation goals. “For the Clean Industrial Deal to succeed, it must include all sectors, as neglecting any part of the industrial ecosystem risks undermining the entire Deal”, concluded Korrina Hegarty, APPLiA’s Senior Policy Director on Environment.
