Producers subscribe to rules that help consumers choose the best iron for them

Our industry 01 Jul 2019

As from 1 July the comparison of steam ironing products and their steam rate will be much easier and more comprehensive. APPLiA, which represents the home appliance industry, has created a Code of Conduct that defines a common approach for assessing, declaring and communicating on steam rates. Consumers benefit from a better comparability, which will support them in their purchase decision.

Moreover, APPLiA has already facilitated two similar voluntary industry initiatives this year: a code on marking certain large appliances containing F-Gases and a code on Vacuum Insulation Panels both of which are aimed at facilitating recycling the end of life products.

“Informing the society in the best possible way and consumer choice have been the main drivers for manufacturers to work on consistent steam rate declarations. In order to achieve transparency, the Code of Conduct follows the measurement method set by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC)”, the Director General of APPLiA, Paolo Falcioni said.

As ironing a shirt can sometimes be challenging, this IEC standard describes the method for measuring irons’ performance in nearly 60 pages of formulas, determining for example how the test garment is left in an atmosphere having a relative humidity, the measurement of the heating up time or the calculation of the hottest point, and the steam rate. This Code of Conduct includes a verification procedure by four independent laboratories which have been selected and verified by a Round Robin Test to ensure the consistency of the testing procedure.

For the moment, 18 key brands have subscribed to the Code of Conduct and all interested brands can join at any time.

The list of participants to the Code of Conduct is the following: AEG, Altus, Arcelik, Arctic, Ariete, Beko, BOSCH, Braun, Calor, De’Longhi, Electrolux, Grundig, Moulinex, Philips, Rowenta, Siemens, Tefal and Vestel.
