APPLiA joins industry call for clear and harmonised EU packaging labels

Policy papers 12 Jun 2026

APPLiA has joined industry partners in a joint call for future EU packaging labels that are clear, coherent and fit for the Single Market.

As new harmonised labels are developed under the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, it is essential that the future system helps consumers sort packaging waste correctly, while avoiding new barriers for products placed across Europe.

Companies today already face a growing number of labelling requirements stemming from both EU and national rules. Additional text, different formats or overlapping obligations risk making packaging harder to manage, increasing costs and creating confusion instead of clarity.

Future harmonised labels should support the free movement of goods across the EU, avoid unnecessary costs and administrative burdens, provide consumers with clear and effective information, and enable flexible digital solutions where appropriate.

APPLiA calls on the European Commission and Member States to ensure that the future labelling system remains clear for consumers, practical for manufacturers and aligned with Europe’s simplification and competitiveness agenda.
