APPLiA amendments to STOP double regulation under the Environment Omnibus

Policy papers 06 Oct 2025

Home appliances are built to last but EU rules are making repairs harder than they should be.

Today, due to conflicting EU regulations, when rules for individual parts (like motors or light sources) are updated, older spare parts can become illegal to sell, even if they work perfectly!

This forces consumers to replace the entire appliance just because one component can’t be replaced.

To fix this, APPLiA is calling on the EU to streamline its rules. We propose that the final appliance, which already meets strict efficiency standards, should be the focus of regulation, not its individual parts, especially when they're sold as spares for older models.

By amending the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) and the Energy Labelling Framework, we can remove these unnecessary barriers to repair. This simple change will not only cut down on red tape but, most importantly, will ensure that spare parts remain available, making it easier to repair and extend the life of appliances, saving consumers money and reducing waste.
