APPLiA, together with other industry associations, is calling for immediate and effective action to tackle the unchecked flow of unsafe, non-compliant products entering the EU via online marketplaces.
Every day, approximately 12 million parcels are imported into the EU without proper controls. The proposed €2 handling fee on goods from non-EU sellers, while a small step in the right direction, is not sufficient to address the scale of the issue or to ensure a level playing field for companies that comply with EU rules.
To effectively address the issue, the following measures are necessary:
Recognise online marketplaces as economic operators when there is no EU-based responsible party
Enforce measures that apply beyond the border, with clear liability and effective sanctions
Close legal loopholes currently exploited by non-compliant sellers
Ensure strong due diligence requirements before products are listed online
We call on the European Commission, the European Parliament, and Member States to take the necessary measures to protect EU consumers and ensure fair conditions for compliant businesses.
